TREE PRUNING GUIDE

Please note that there are best times of the year to prune and times when pruning should be avoided. These times are different for different varieties of trees and in different areas of the country.

Proper Steps:

  1. Clean and disinfect your pruning tools with alcohol or a bleach solution before you begin. Tools should also be cleaned before you begin work on another tree.
  2. Your first cut is to undercut the limb partially through. This cut should be made several inches from the main trunk or branch.

     3.     Next, cut through the limb from the top beyond your first cut.

      4.     The third cut is the most important. Never cut flush with the main trunk or branch. Many trees have a visible “collar”. Make your final cut just outside of the collar. If there is no visible collar look for the bark ridge and envision an imaginary line parallel to the trunk and come out at slightly less than the same angle as the bark ridge with your final cut.

     5.     Apply a thin coat (more is not better) of Treekote tree wound dressing to the exposed area. This has been proven to help protect the tree from the spread of disease and to reduce cambial dieback.
